What does landscaping include?

When you book your landscaper, it’s important to let them know in your task exactly what work you need to be done. That way, they’ll be able to make you a fair offer and bring along the right tools for the job.?

Not sure where to start? If you need a range of general landscaping services, grab a notepad and pen, then go for a wander outside. Make a note of anything that needs tidying up, trimming, or removing. Then make sure you include these tasks in your listing.?

Another way to think about your landscaping is to break it down by the type of specialised skill or service you need. Here are some of the jobs you might give to your landscaper and what you can expect to happen during the process.

When you’re undertaking a BIG change, it’s important to lay the groundwork with some planning, first. A garden designer will help?come up with ideas and map everything out on paper before you get started. Or you might hire a landscape architect to plan a larger commercial landscaping project in your local community or public space.

Earth and rocks

Don’t break your back over your backyard landscaping - no matter how little or how much you need to do. You can hire earthmoving contractors to do your trench digging, levelling, and even your pool excavation or boring excavation. They’ll bring the all tools and equipment needed to dig and move the earth so you (literally) don’t have to get your hands dirty.

Planning a nice new garden bed to grow your own veggies, flowers, shady trees, or just want to reduce the amount of ground you have to mow? Get some help with your garden landscaping and garden edging to get the project off your to-do list and done sooner. That way, you can get on with the fun bit - planting!

Where there are plants, there’s water. Make sure your plants get water when they need it (without having to remember to hose) with a drip irrigation system or a sprinkler system installation. Or make your garden more beautiful with a garden pond or water features. Either way, getting your water systems sorted is so much quicker and easier with an extra pair of hands or a landscaper near you who knows what they’re doing.

Trees are wonderful things, but sometimes, a tree’s gotta go. If you’re not experienced, you should never do chainsawing, stump grinding, wood chipping and mulching, or land clearing yourself. That’s something you should leave up to an experienced landscaper with the right equipment and background to get the job done properly and safely.?

Building and installations

A big component of landscaping is installing things to make your space more functional and beautiful. Things like retaining walls, artificial turf, landscape lighting or even garden benches to sit on. It’s always best to get a landscaper to help when it involves heavy lifting or specialist equipment. They’ll help you get your installations done safely and help you start enjoying your space much sooner.

6 hours of soil moving

Brunswick West, Victoria, Australia

19th Nov 2020

Hi there, I have around 6 cubic metres of soil that will need to be moved out of 1m3 bags into a new garden bed. The bags will be lifted from a crane truck onto the grass which is roughly at the same level as the garden bed, so it should be just a matter of moving the soil across. There are already 2 of us available to pitch in, but we need another gardener to make sure the soil is shifted in a timely manner on Friday 4th December 9am-3pm. We are offering about 6 hours of work to the successful tasker and will pay $40/hour. The work is in Brunswick West.

We need someone to help move ~3m3 of freshly delivered soil from driveway to garden area approx. 30m away, and lay it well (we have someone on site for guidance) using wheelbarrow and shovel. also move and position a few heavy stepping stones. We are planning 4 hours of work for now. Arrival in Fitzroy at 8.30am tomorrow Wed, and planned finished 12.30pm. Paying 4 hours + 1 hour of transport = 5 hours. Working/security shoes required - with higher ankle cover (no sneakers) - We can supply work gloves and will cash compensate for commission.

Shift 3 cubic metres of soil & cut tree roots

Abbotsford VIC, Australia

5th Nov 2020

We have a small walled garden approx 4.5 x 2 metres. Tree roots blocked its drainage, so it floods. The tree and its stump have been removed. We need to remove the soil and the roots so we can find and fix the drainage. There's about 3 cubic metres of soil that needs to be transferred with shovels onto an adjacent deck. There are two steps up from the garden bed to the deck. There are a lot of roots that need to be cut (with a mattock or saw) and removed too. It's hard to estimate how many hours work - maybe 4 hours.

Excellent, hardworking person with can-do attitude to the difficult job we needed done. Very happy to recommend Paul.

Big bed L = 1.5m W = 1.86 H = 60cm Small bed L = 1.5m W = 1m H = 60cm The big bed is quarter full already, but due to lockdown could not finish it off. Small wheelbarrow and spade provided but better if you can bring your own (particularly wheelbarrow). Strong person to help move rocks

Fairfield VIC, Australia

15th Oct 2020

Hi there, I need a really strong person and a decent wheel barrow to help move some rocks down the side of the house into the backyard. It’s a straight uninterrupted line. There are two people here to help too. We have a wheel barrow but it will only be useful for the smaller ones. Any other equipment which could be useful we could hire that too (the side passage is 1m wide so too small for a bobcat). I’ve bought rocks with the weight/ability to be moved by a human with a wheelbarrow. We should be able to get them all however we will just move what we can from the pile. $60 an hour until we give up.

Dave is a legend! Great worker, reliable, completely capable and easy going. Went above and beyond! Thank you again for your help!
